How does laser cutting and laser engraving work on paper?

Lasers are extremely suitable for making even the finest geometries. Maximum precision and quality are guaranteed. A cutting plotter can not meet those needs. Laser paper cutting machines not only allow the most delicate paper shapes to be cut, but also the engraving of logos or photographs can be implemented effortlessly.

Does the paper burn during laser cutting?

As with wood, which has the same chemical composition, the paper evaporates ("sublimation"). In the area of cutting play, the transition takes place from the fixed paper phase to the gas phase. This becomes visible in the form of smoke, at a rapid pace. This smoke transports the heat away from the paper. As a result, the heat load on the paper, close to the cutting clearance, is relatively low. This aspect in particular makes laser cutting of paper interesting: the material has no smoke remains or burnt edges; not even for the finest contours.

Do I have to attach the material to the work surface?

No, not manually. To achieve optimum cutting results, we recommend the use of a honeycomb bed on which you fix the material with small magnets. Thin or wavy material, such as cardboard, is positioned flat on the work table. The honeycomb supports the material so that it is nicely flat. In addition, this prevents the material from breaking. The laser exerts no pressure on the material during the process. For more accurate positioning, there are also options for using a vacuum table. Clamps or any other form of attachment is therefore not necessary. This saves time and money when preparing the material. Because of all these advantages, the laser is the perfect paper cutting machine.

Suitable laser machines

For cutting wood, leather, and a large number of plastics, you have one CO2 laser machine required. Important things to keep in mind are: what is the maximum size of the object that I want to cut out, that determines the size of your worktop and what is the maximum thickness that has to be cut that determines the laser power you need.
