How does a laser machine work?

LASER is an acronym and stands for “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. In simpler words, light particles (photons) that are charged with current emit energy in the form of light. This light is bundled into a beam.

All lasers consist of three components:

  1. An external pump source
  2. The active laser medium
  3. The resonator.

The pump source directs external energy to the laser.

The active laser medium is located inside the laser. Depending on the design, the lasing medium may consist of a gas mixture (CO2 laser machines), a crystal body (YAG laser) or glass fibers (fiber laser). Of low power fiber lasers allow you to laser engrave of, among other things, metals, with high power fiber lasers allow you to laser cut metals. When energy is supplied to the lasing medium by the pump, it radiates energy in the form of radiation.

The active laser medium is located between two mirrors, the “resonator”. One of these mirrors is a one-way mirror. The radiation of the active laser medium is amplified in the resonator. At the same time, only a certain radiation can leave the resonator through the one-way mirror. This bundled radiation is the laser radiation. Source wiki.

Properties of a laser beam: monochrome and high coherence

Laser radiation has three basic properties:

  1. Monochrome. This means that the radiation consists of only one wavelength.
  2. High coherence and also phase coherence.
  3. The waves of the laser are approximately parallel due to the coherence

These properties allow laser light to be used in many ways of modern material processing. The intensity is preserved for a long time by the coherence and can be focused even further by lenses. The laser beam hits the surface of the material and is absorbed. This is how he heats the material. This heat generation allows the material to be removed or completely evaporated. For example, it is possible to laser engrave, laser mark or laser cut a large number of materials.

Different materials react differently to different wavelengths. For example, a wavelength of 10.6 micrometers is used for CO2 laser machines and a wavelength of 1064nm for fiber lasers.

CO2 Laser Machines

MetaQuip's CO2 laser machines are the ideal solution for professionals who are looking for precision, speed and versatility in their work processes. Fiber laser engraving machines – laser engraving of (precious) metals

Fiber lasers are specifically designed to engrave and mark a wide range of metals with exceptional speed and precision. Materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum, gold, silver, titanium, and copper can be processed effortlessly, something that is not possible with a standard CO2 laser. Due to the higher speed and resolution, a fiber laser offers significantly better performance than a CO2 laser, especially for detailed designs and complex markings.

Fiber lasers are ideally suited for a wide range of applications, such as engraving type numbers, logos, barcodes and QR codes. They are also particularly popular with jewelers due to their short changeover times, making it easy to quickly switch between different designs. With their versatility and high precision, fiber lasers offer a future-proof solution for both industrial and creative applications.

Right away 1064nm fiber laser you can engrave certain plastics and a limited number of other materials in addition to metals. Here is an overview of materials that are suitable for engraving or marking with a 1064nm fiber laser:

Metal

  • Steel (carbon steel, tool steel, stainless steel/stainless steel)
  • Aluminum (also anodized aluminum), Copper
  • Brass
  • Titanium
  • gold
  • Silver
  • Platinum
  • Zinc
  • Magnesium
  • Nickel and nickel alloys
  • Hard metals (such as tungsten carbide)

Plastics

Depending on composition!

  • ABS
  • Polycarbonate (PC)
  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polystyrene (PS)
  • Acrylic (PMMA)
  • PEEK (Polyetheretherketone)
  • Nylon
  • Delrin (POM)

Please note: Plastics must be suitable for fiber laser engraving. Some plastics require additives to enable engraving.

Other Materials

  • Ceramics (especially with a coating or surface modification)
  • Anodized or powder coated surfaces
  • Lacquered or painted metals
  • Coated fiberglass (specific applications)

Unsuitable Materials

  • Wood (a CO2 laser is more suitable for this)
  • Glass (CO2 or UV lasers are more suitable for this)
  • Transparent or translucent plastics (unless they contain additives that absorb the laser).

Open fiber lasers

A open fiber laser offers maximum accessibility and speed, making it easy to engrave larger objects. This open design allows for flexible and efficient work, especially on projects with larger workpieces. However, it is important to have the necessary laser safety measures such as wearing appropriate laser goggles and using other protective equipment to work safely with this powerful technology. This combination of accessibility, speed and precision makes the open fiber laser an excellent choice for professional users.

Closed fiber lasers

A closed fiber laser offers maximum operator safety, thanks to the fully enclosed design. When the laser is active, the housing prevents the operator from being exposed to laser light, completely eliminating the risk of injury. This makes enclosed fiber lasers not only extremely safe, but also suitable for environments where strict safety standards apply. While maintaining the precision, speed and power of fiber laser technology, an enclosed fiber laser is the ideal choice for companies that want to combine safety and efficiency in their production processes.
